This sculpture is the portrait of a Moche king. Sculptures such as this one were made from master molds and widely distributed through the kingdom to reinforce the authority of the Moche rulers. Textiles were highly valued in ancient Peruvian cultures, and the embroidered headband, as well as the regal bearing of this man, indicate his high rank. The portrait is also a clay cup. Where is the pouring spout? The handle is formed in the shape of a stirrup, allowing for the passage of air through one side and liquid through the other.
